Stop HIV AIDS

Even if by some miraculous measure we can completely cut off all the possible ways that HIV AIDS can be spread, we will still see a sharp increase in the number of people with HIV AIDS five years from now.
This is the statement made by Doctor Suharto, SpKO, DPH from National AIDS Commission. He also said that only Thailand and Australia have successfully managed to control the increase rate of the number of people with HIV AIDS. Indonesia, like many other countries in Asia, is still struggling with the horrific number of new HIV AIDS cases every year.

Based on a report from the Ministry of Health, until September 3338 people have been infected by HIV, with 2363 confirmed AIDS cases. It is also reported that the biggest cause of HIV AIDS transmission is not heterosexual intercourse (39.7%), or homosexual intercourse (6.2%), but the use of syringe to inject drugs (40.5%).

HIV infection is growing most rapidly among the thousands of Indonesians who inject drugs. It is estimated that were between 124,000 – 202,000 IDUs (Injecting Drug Users) in Indonesia at the end years, and the number is still growing. It is quite common for IDUs to share syringes to inject drugs, without the taking necessary precautions to sterilize the needles to avoid transmission of diseases. Through this practice a lot of IDUs have caught HIV AIDS, which they later spread to their spouses and children. Based on these findings, the National AIDS Commission, along with its NGO partners, have launched the campaign to reduce the harm of using drugs by injection. At first glance, this program might seem like a nod to drug abuse. But since there is still an upsurge in the number of drug users, despite the nationwide campaign against it, it is thought that an action should be taken to make sure that the drug users will not have HIV AIDS on top of their already overwhelming problem of drug addiction.

The Harm Reduction campaign consists of the following recommendations :
- Stop using drug entirely
- If you cannot stop using drugs yet, don’t share syringes with other IDUs
- If you have no other choice but to share syringes, make sure you sterilize them before using them
